Altiplano (I) - Altiplano Expedition
To boldly go where no man has gone before... except for maybe a few Incas who are now long dead.
The photos below were taken during an expedition to the Chilean Altiplano (highlands - 2nd and 3rd Region). The main target was the Lagunas Bravas. To get there we first drove from Copiapo to the East, to the Laguna Santa Rosa. There we left the road to drive North towards the Lagunas Bravas. From there we continued North and then East towards Taltal. During most of the expedition we had to find our own way between old volcanoes, lagunas and dried up salt lakes, the nearest village often being at least two days away (by car). We had to leave one vehicle behind due to motor problems (it was recuperated later on), and at one point we had to illegally cross the border into Argentina because that was the only way to go around one of the volcanoes, but the team (8 people, 3 cars) eventually managed to make it back to the civilised world safely.
